We’ve put together some ideas to help you whilst we’re all living with the impact and restrictions of COVID-19. There are suggestions for things you can do, ideas for keeping active, and links to other activities or projects you can get involved in whilst keeping safe. There’s also some information about who you can talk to if you’re worried, and suggestions for parents as well. If you have any ideas of things we can add please just let us know.

At the Youth Adventure Trust we’re all about resilience, and that’s more important than ever during this time. Whilst we can’t run our usual programme this year, we can still find ways to keep positive and make the best we can of things.

Back to School Support
Below you will find some practical advice and tips on how to cope if you are feeling worried or anxious about the return to school in September.

- Star Project Video – This video is designed for young people to help combat any anxieties about returning to school following lockdown.
- Childline – If you’re scared or anxious about going back to school, Childline have put together some ways you can make it better.
- Useful apps – A list of different Apps you can download to help you cope with a range of issues.
- Strategies developed by other young people – A selection of self-care strategies that have been developed by young people to help manage their own well-being. Everything from challenging negative thoughts to using yoga and exercise.
- Self help guides – A collection of downloadable, self-help guides, endorsed by mental health professionals. The guides include advice on Mindfulness, Anxiety, Stress, Self-esteem, Self-harm, Resilience and lots more.
- COVID-19 information – Information about COVID-19, simple steps you can take to reduce your risk and frequently asked questions about the virus. All written with young people in mind.
- The FA’s free SuperKicks app is available with hundreds of challenges with various levels built in for young people to try.
- GetOutside Safely Lots of ideas and links from outdoor organisations on how to get connected with the outdoors and engaged with our natural environments whilst keeping safe.
- Joe Wicks Hosting Youtube PE Lessons 9am every day Monday to Friday.
- Oti Mabuse Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse will be hosting free online dance classes for children and adults. She is posting videos on her YouTube channel teaching routines to Strictly-inspired dances to help people learn a new skill while they are at home. The young people’s classes air at 11.30am while the adult version is at 7.30pm.
- Yoga With Adriene Hours of indoor Yoga sessions to help you keep fit and relaxed indoors.
- Egg box bounce – Grab a few old egg boxes and some bouncy balls, ping pong balls (or whatever you can find). Set yourself the challenge of trying to bounce the balls into the egg box in different orders or patterns.
- The floor is lava Put cushions and tea towels on the floor to help you make your way around the room without touching the floor.
- Fun circuit training Draw pictures of different activities and place them around the room – or all over the house. You need to visit each picture and do the activity – e.g. hop on one leg 10 times, do 10 star jumps, 5 second sprint on the spot, 2 forward rolls, and so on. See how many circuits they can manage on day one, and set yourself a challenge to try and improve over a week.
- Choose a song for a choreography challenge Create a dance routine to your favourite song, see if you can remember it all!
Workouts and Apps
- The Great Indoors Bear Grylls has created a weekly live video feed called The Great Indoors which will include making lolly-stick catapults, origami and designing and making hot-air balloons and all activities can be done in the house or garden.
- National Shelf Service, is a new daily YouTube broadcast featuring eBook recommendations from professional librarians. Focusing on helping children and families discover new, diverse reading experiences, the broadcast will run Monday to Friday at 11am.
- Visit the Arts in Wiltshire blog for a wide array of ideas to draw, write, sing, watch theatre, shows, films, documentaries as well as ideas to get involved in dance, photography, crafts and much, much more. This blog has a large number of links to other resources for you to try.
- KAPOW! The marvellous Cartoon Museum has produced free resources showing people how to draw their own comic stories, create caricatures and more.
- Fender Play is a programme of free guitar lessons being offered by Fender, the worlds most famous guitar company. If there is a guitar in the house why not start learning.
- Paper aeroplane competition Compare different designs and see how well they fly and land.
- Create an artistic collage Cut out from magazines and catalogues, use stickers and paint to bring it to life.
- Rock Art Raid the garden for decent sized stones and do some rock paintings.
- Make a loo roll bird feeder This is messy fun to get stuck into;
- Smother a cardboard tube in peanut butter (no added salt and sugar versions are suitable for birds).
- Roll it in seed and thread some string through the hole.
- Tie it up in your garden where birds will feel safe eating.
- How many garden birds will you spot?
- Have a picnic in your garden Pack up your lunch and take it outdoors to your garden or backyard; even just a little fresh air can help you feel more positive and energised.
- Free Drawing Lessons Art For Kids Hub is a YouTube channel with lots of great drawing videos that teach as you draw along with them.
- Free Drawing Lessons Mo Willems, the famous children’s author, is giving free drawing lessons called “Lunch Doodles” on YouTube every weekday.
- Origami Jumping Frog. Make a jumping frog in this video which teaches you as you watch this video. There are loads of origami videos on YouTube, from ninja stars to speedboats. Why not give some of them a go.
Connecting with others
- The Great British Home Chorus Gareth Malone is bringing together both amateur and professional performers around the country. The Great British Home Chorus aim to give everyone the opportunity to contribute their voices and instruments in an ambitious digital music project.
- Kahoot Start a fun game with friends and family from your home with Kahoot. Lots of games available to play with people in your house, or people staying at home elsewhere. You can connect with friends and family via video calls whilst playing games and quizzes together.
- Write a letter Especially if you have an older relative who might be feeling lonely and doesn’t have access to technology.
- Create a positive / uplifting / encouraging message or picture to put in your window or outside This way you can spread happiness to anyone who passes by.
Learning something new
- Dyson Download challenge cards to see if you can skewer a balloon without popping it, or see what happens when you plug a clock into a potato…
- BBC Bitesize are adding 3 new lessons for each yeargroup every single day. Just put in your yeargroup to get started.
- Rosetta Stone The language course specialists, are offering free 3 months access for school age people to start learning a new language.
- TED-Ed To support the millions of students, parents and teachers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, TED-Ed is working with expert educators and TED speakers throughout the world to create and share high-quality, interactive, video-based lessons on a daily basis, for free.
- Drawing challenges The Marvel Spiderman artist Will Silney is teaching you how to draw, search #WeWillDraw.
- Audible Stories The online audiobook site has launched Audible Stories, a new service providing free audiobooks to young people.
- 75 Virtual Museum Tours The world’s most popular museums are now just a click away thanks to incredible free virtual tours.
- Steve Backshall The Nature presenter has been giving virtual talks about wildlife, biology, conservation, geography and exploration. Head to Steve Backshall YouTube channel for more information.
- Myleene Klass Was providing free music lessons for families online every week during lockdown. They are all still available. It is an introduction to music in a simple, entertaining way. You don’t need your own instrument to be able to participate, there are interactive elements with items from around the house.
- Watch virtual cooking lessons from famous chefs Loads of famous chefs are offering free cooking lessons online. Just search a famous chef’s name. Jamie Oliver is always great!
- Borough Market Cooking Courses You can take online cooking classes from London’s Borough Market. The famous market is streaming classes on its Facebook page.
- Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq Will be releasing science videos at 10am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through her official YouTube channel, which she promises will be “educational but entertaining, low tech but fun.”
- Gardening and Nature with Maddie and Greg Serving up lessons on the great outdoors indoors, each weekday they’ll be dropping a live half-show at 11am on Youtube, delving into everything from daffodil Dissection to how to make a bird feeder.
- Darcey Bussell From Strictly Come Dancing has been live broadcasting a 10-minute children’s dance fitness programme on Facebook throughout lockdown. There all still available.
- National Geographic Are offering lots of activities and interactive material for young people.
- Could staying at home be the perfect time to get on top of things? BBC bitesize have put together a 14 day Sort-Your-Life-Out Challenge here.
- Or perhaps a 7-days-of-kindness challenge sounds good?
- The British Exploration Society usually run expeditions for young people all over the world. Now they have launched their Wildestan series of videos. From setting up a hammock to making insect traps, you can watch Expedition Leaders showing you cool skills they would use whilst camping or on expedition
- Blue Peter are launching their ‘6 badges of Summer’ challenge. Check out how to win 6 different Blue Peter badges by following the link.
- You could make your own slime, find out how here.
- FilmedOnStage are offering free musicals and plays you can stream during the Coronavirus outbreak. They update the page daily.
- Carol Vorderman will be putting her mathematical skills at the nation’s disposal. Her online maths programme, The Maths Factor, has waived its usual weekly fees to provide free tuition to anyone of school age while the schools are closed.
- Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is offering a free streaming service for everyone. Redeem your voucher and receive free access to concerts and films in the digital concert hall.
- Dance Performances Sadler’s Wells presents a programme of full-length dance performances and workshops online, to keep you entertained and connected through dance, wherever you are in the world.
- Art Galleries Many galleries are offering online access to their exhibitions and archives such as Tate Gallery, The National Gallery, The Southbank Centre.
- Detroit Symphony Orchestra The orchestra can come to you in your homes with free access to DSO Replay, a service letting you watch past performances.
- Royal Opera House Have created a schedule of free broadcasts and live content that audiences can access for free at anytime, bringing both ballet and opera to every home and every device.
- Take a Tour of Disneyland, or any other place in the world Take a tour of somewhere amazing in the world using Google Street View. If not Disneyland how about London, New York, Hollywood; Head to www.google.com/maps
- Tourist attractions and Iconic National Parks You can see many of the Wonders of the World without having to leave the house. A virtual 360 degree tour of the Great Wall of China can be found online, while Google Arts & Culture has views from the top of the Eiffel Tower to the Taj Mahal in India. Take a tour of Lapland via YouTube or explore stunning National Parks across America.
- ChatterPack.net Has lots of ideas to ‘bust the boredom’ including links to language courses, computer programming games and great ideas you can use to help nature in your garden.
- Livestream animals at Aquariums and Zoos Many zoos and aquariums are livestreaming or offering virtual tours so you can enjoy the animals. Some of the best are listed below;
- Taskmaster The popular TV show broadcast on the channel ‘Dave’ is running a series of challenges for you to get involved with. You can upload a video of yourself completing the tasks. Prizes are available for the best entrants.
- Meditation Download Headspace or Calm apps for free guided meditation sessions.

- BBC News For reliable, trustworthy information about the current situation with Coronavirus. But remember it’s may not help you to check the news too many times in one day.
- YoungScot This is an information site about Coronavirus aimed at young people in Scotland, but all the information is the same for people in England too.
- A Comic Explaining and Exploring Coronavirus A reporter asked some experts about Coronavirus and wrote a comic book to explain it.

Advice for parents and carers
- Public Health England Have produced a webpage offering guidance for parents and carers on supporting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing during the Coronavirus outbreak.
- If you have a medical condition which makes you extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 please visit the government website here and register. You can then get any support you may need.
- The Child Mind Institute have written an article giving advice on how to support teenagers and young people during the Coronavirus crisis.
- The NSPCC has a hub of information for parents and carers including an article entitled Talking to a child worried about coronavirus.
- Team GB’s Get Set programme has put together a range of free activities, challenges and learning resources to using the Olympic and Paralympic values to help children aged 5-18 to get active.
